Matrescence is the holistic, often intense process of becoming a mother, encompassing physical, emotional, hormonal and social changes, simular to the transition of adolescence. Coined by Dana Raphael in the 70s, this long-lasting transformation involves identity shifts, body changes, and the restructuring of relationships, typically spanning from pregnancy, through the postnatal period and ongoing.

Both services are fantastic and offer different things. I was luckily enough to attend an amazing group antenatal class, who introduced me to my ‘Mum tribe’, and I can happily signpost you to several highly recommended group classes if maternity leave pals is what you’re looking for.

If however, you are looking for something slightly more bespoke, private, maybe you have a complex medical history, or perhaps your working pattern would make it difficult for you to attend a class in the evening for a couple weeks, then Cheltenham Matrescence is happy to schedule bespoke sessions at a time to suit you.

I do recommend that from 28 weeks onwards is a good place to start to learn about labour, hynobirthing, birth and the postnatal period, including care of the mother or birthing person, baby care and feeding support (breast or bottle)
